As part of the nationwide economic stimulus program, PennDOT is planning to resurface a two-mile section of I-83 from the Union Deposit Interchange to the I-81 Interchange. The work will consist of milling and resurfacing the northbound and southbound lanes of I-83 to improve the ride quality.
The I-83 resurfacing project will also include safety improvements at the Colonial Park Interchange with U.S. 22 (Jonestown Road), which were identified as an early-action goal during the preparation of the 2003 I-83 planning study, the I-83 Master Plan. To eliminate the existing vehicle conflicts along I-83 southbound, the loop ramp from southbound I-83 to eastbound U.S. 22 will be removed. The traffic to U.S. 22 eastbound will use the same ramp as the U.S. 22 westbound traffic, through a new signalized intersection on U.S. 22 near the Zimmerman Auer Funeral Home.
The project is expected to start before Labor Day 2009 and be completed in 2010.
