Preliminary engineering and environmental studies began in August 2006 on this section of I-83 between the junction with I-81 and Derry Street, which is just to the north of the Eisenhower Interchange. As noted on the Main Home Page, preliminary engineering and environmental studies are nearing completion. Funding options are currently being explored for future project phases.
As the project progresses, the goal will be full depth reconstruction of the existing roadways, except for the section south of the Union Deposit Interchange that was reconstructed in the 90's. The project will include the reconstruction of the Colonial Park Interchange and the Union Deposit Interchange, and will likely provide a widened roadway with three lanes in both directions plus an auxiliary lane between interchanges.
